TERRACE
The terrace is what makes the apartment exceptional. Unfortunately, the photos I have do not do it justice. It is large, about 85 ft², with expansive views of old Madrid. It is covered and therefore shaded but gets sufficient morning light to grow a variety of plants.
We made few changes to the terrace. We replaced the tile flooring, added a spigot for watering plants, and an electrical outlet. We installed the double-paned sliding doors for sound and temperature insulation. We, also, installed a simple system for humidity to make it cooler and more pleasant to sit outside during the hot dry summers.
The terraces are rectangular, inset into the building, formed by 2 1/2 exterior walls. The front and part of one side are open with a cast iron metal railing. The walls are finished with “Gresite” mosaic tile, original to the mid-century building.
Sitting on the terrace is delightful both winter and summer, being on the sixth floor it is far enough above the street to feel private. It has exterior lights so can be used in the evening as well; a place to have a casual dinner, drinks or to sit and read.
