Movement and Harmony- Keys to Good Design
“A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy.” Juan Montoya
Good design is like music. Your eye should constantly move through space, flowing from one room into the other. Details create rhythm and balance, each element in harmony with the other. Two rooms of the exact same size and dimensions can feel quite different. Static spaces feel oppressive and claustrophobic, giving the impression that they are smaller than they are. Whereas the careful choice of details, color and texture can create the opposite effect. The contrast of complementary colors, smooth vs rough textures, and design elements that move your eye from one space to the next can create the perception of larger, airier, more visually dynamic spaces.
Flowing from one room into another, the single most important design element in your home is the floor. It can be the focal point from which all other aesthetic decisions are made. We chose wood flooring in the rich red tones of Jatoba / Brazilian Cherry. Wood floors are comfortable beneath your feet, have a nice sound when walked on, and can provide a sense of warmth to open spaces. The vibrant deep red of the long Jatoba / Brazilian Cherry boards unify the separate spaces, which is further enhanced by the decorative painting using complementary colors in pale green.
The continuity in flooring and wall finishes make the spaces seem larger and more open, while the warmth of the red tones maintain an intimate feel suitable for a home. The only division of space is either temporarily created with sliding glass doors or is implied by ceiling details and subtle relief columns.
Harmony between rooms is created by choosing tones in the kitchen floor tile which complement the dynamic reds in the wood flooring, and using similar colors in the wall finish in the laundry room further unifies the spaces.
