SMALL BATH

The small bathroom is less than 30 ft², so small that it is difficult to photograph. We had to make careful design choices for the space to feel vibrant and not claustrophobic; every element had to be functional and space-saving. We chose geometric tile patterns, placing two stripes of bright red mosaic tile in the shower and behind the sink, making the space more visually exciting.

Small Bathroom

The bathroom had been redone a few years earlier, with glossy blue and white tiles, and an ugly floral trim. The tile height, covering 3/4 of the bathroom wall, accentuated the narrowness of the room.

The red and white rectified porcelain tile are from the same manufacturer in different colors, purchased from Azulejos Peña. The edges are finished with a polished chrome trim. We maintained the original sink, as it is the perfect size for the space.

Shower

We used a variety of tile sizes throughout the bathroom. In the shower, the red mosaic tile is above 6′ rectangular tiles and  is bordered by 3″ white tiles. The shower has a thermostatic mixer which automatically adjusts to any changes in the incoming water supply to maintain a constant temperature.

Floor Tile

The floor is a high-quality glossy black porcelain tile. The small bathroom enabled us to purchase an expensive tile, since we needed so little. The toilet is by Roca, specially designed for narrow spaces.

Tile Detail

Behind the sink, the vertical mosaic tile is bordered by 3″ rectangular tiles. The soft grey-blue wall color is reflected in the mirror.

Wall Tile

We only tiled the walls to 36″ as to not overwhelm the space. They are finished with a polished chrome trim.

The walls are finished with the same decorative painting technique used throughout the house. Multiple shades of blue and grey are mixed directly on the wall with glaze. The finish is durable, easy to clean, and particularly suitable to humid areas.

We added small chrome light fixtures on each side of the mirror and chrome shelving, which is also from Radissa.

Construction

The bathroom after demolition.

Construction

The plumbing for the kitchen and laundry was run through the bathroom walls, and floor.

Construction

The wall between the two bathrooms was so water damaged that it collapsed when we opened it. We had to rebuild the wall around the new plumbing.
