LARGE BATH

There are two bathrooms in the apartment, neither of which are very big. This, the largest, is a little less than 50 ft². In order to maximize space, we completely rearranged the bathroom fixtures. We moved the bathtub to under the window and placed the toilet and sink where the bathtub used to be. Both the white wall tile and the black floor tile are rectified porcelain from Azulejos Peña.

The original bathroom felt very long and narrow. It had a hideous beige tile floor and aqua tile walls. There was water damage from the  communal sewage pipe requiring us to not just remove the tile, but to open all the walls as well.

The choice of white tile and fixtures, mixed with the silver accents, and the grey-green colors on the wall, make the bathroom seem larger and more light filled. The sink is suspended from the wall, and the cabinet underneath is movable.  The door has sandblasted safety glass for privacy.

Floor Tile

The floor tile is a rectified porcelain tile from Azulejos Peña. It is reddish black with blue-green accents. We finished it with chrome edging. The baseboard is brushed chrome.

Details

The tile box around the bathtub does not continue straight down to the floor. There is an overhang about 5 inches deep, which extends the floor space, making the bathroom appear larger.

This photo more clearly shows the shape of the bathtub enclosure as well as the tile, the edging, and the baseboard.

Bathtub

The five-foot bathtub is built-in underneath the window. The communal sewage pipe is enclosed in the column on the left, which required the bath tub to be offset from the wall. Because of this, we surrounded the tub with wide ledges, tiled in the same rectified porcelain tile as the floor.  The raw edges of tile are finished with a polished chrome edging, accenting the bathroom fixtures, creating a clean elegant look.

Shower

The shower is by Grohe. It has a rain showerhead, two body jets, and a hand shower. The column on the right houses the communal sewage and water pipes. The tile throughout the bathroom is finished with chrome edges.

This is a close up of the handheld showerhead and body jets. The height of the handheld shower is adjustable. The tile behind the showerhead has a vertical rectangular mosaic pattern.

Bathtub Faucet

The bathtub faucet is a single-hole waterfall faucet by Grohe.

Sink Faucet

The sink, like the bathtub, has a single-hole waterfall faucet by Grohe.

The walls were painted with the same decorative painting technique used throughout the apartment. Multiple colors of paint are mixed with glaze directly on the wall during application. It creates a surface that is visually dynamic, durable and easy to clean. It is especially suitable for bathrooms and other humid areas. The window has smoked tempered glass for privacy.

Bathroom Storage

We used a wall storage system from Ikea, that is designed for kitchens, to hold bathroom accessories. The hanging jars are perfect for hair and makeup brushes, and the stainless steel spice jars are great for storing makeup and hair accessories.

The large beveled mirror is an exhibition model from Radissa, where we also purchased the sink and faucets. The radiator reflected in the mirror is original to the apartment.

The building’s communal sewage and water pipes are hidden in a vertical column on the left. The bathtub is supported on a brick frame.

The plumbing from the kitchen, laundry, and both bathrooms are connected to the buildings communal sewage pipe which runs through the large bathroom wall.

Construction

The wall between the two bathrooms was so water damaged that it collapsed when we opened it. We had to rebuild the wall around the new pipes.
